Chocolate Lush (’Wacky Cake’)

Serves 8

1 cup flour

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar (divided use)

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

one 1-ounce square baking chocolate, melted

2 tablespoons butter, melted

1/2 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup chopped walnuts

3/4 cup brown sugar

4 tablespoons cocoa

1 3/4 cups boiling water

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Mix flour, 3/4 cup sugar, baking powder and salt, then add melted chocolate and melted butter, milk and vanilla. Mix to combine. Spread in a greased 9-inch cake pan.

Mix walnuts, remaining 3/4 cup sugar, brown sugar and cocoa. Sprinkle over the batter that is already in the pan. Then pour the boiling water slowly over all. Bake for 1 hour, putting a cookie sheet on the lower rack to catch any spilled batter. Cool for 15 minutes, loosen around edges with a sharp knife and then invert onto a rimmed serving plate.

Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Per serving: 426 calories, 7 grams protein, 14 grams fat, 4 grams saturated fat, 74 grams carbohydrate, 3 grams fiber, 9 milligrams cholesterol, 250 milligrams sodium

What was life like before music was invented? Dull I imagine. I bet the Grammy Awards were really boring. Thank goodness music did get finally get invented because now the Grammy's are better than ever! I'd like to thank the Grammy people for letting me do my show there. It's one of my favorite shows of the year. I'm really happy about where music is going these days. Taylor Swift is going to be a giant star. James Blunt is always charming. I can't believe he auctioned off his sister on eBay. Weren't Daughtry great sports for performing their song with those instruments I gave them? I think my favorite part of the show was having Chester Pitts and Ephraim Salaam on the red carpet. My Big In Japan Show was a lot of fun too. I love all their goofy inventions. I wonder if the Japanese Ellen has ever done a "Big In America" show? It was great meeting Sir Richard Branson. What a great guy for giving away all those plane tickets. I can't wait till he invites me into space on his spaceship. I love Steve Spangler! Even if he is trying to blow me up. He makes science so fun, it almost makes you forget that it's science. I hope you had a happy Valentine's day. I think Stryker really had Larry King confused when we did the Valentine's Game.

Congratulations to the winners of GMC's and my, Highway To Ellen contest. Those girls seem like a lot of fun. We'll be checking in with them all week. And you can check in on my website too if you want to see what they're up to.

SANTA FE, N.M. — On a cold Saturday morning last month, 16-year-old Chantel Hunt ran across a highway onto a gravel road where the snow under her shoes packed into washboard ripples. She ran around a towering red rock butte, past two old mattresses dumped on the roadside, and into the shadow of a mesa she sometimes runs on top of.

Hunt, a high school junior and a resident of the Navajo Nation, was on a short training run for the national cross-country championships being held Saturday in San Diego. Her team, Wings of America, has risen to prominence with an unlikely collection of athletes. It is a group of American Indians from reservations around the country, and a Wings team has won a boys or a girls national title 20 times since first attending a championship meet in 1988.

“You say Wings of America to anyone in the running community — it’s synonymous with the best Native American runners,” said Eric Heins, the cross-country and distance coach at Northern Arizona University, a program that has benefited from having Wings runners in recent years.

American Indians have especially high rates of youth suicide, Type 2 diabetes and deaths attributed to alcoholism, and extreme poverty is pervasive on many reservations. Wings of America, a 20-year-old nonprofit organization based here, has embraced the challenge.

“The hardest part is getting people to understand, to make the case how important it is,” said Anne Wheelock Gonzales, the organization’s former executive director who now serves as a consultant. “One time someone said, ‘Well, it’s not like you’re saving lives.’ And I said: ‘Excuse me, we are saving lives. That’s exactly what this does.’ ”

If you're a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that.

Before you hibernate, you're supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that, too.

If you're a bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you're sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute cuddly cubs. I could deal with that in a big way.

If you're a mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them, too. I could deal with that.

If you're a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat.

Yup ... gonna be a bear!
